A coalition of West Marin nonprofits have joined together with the support of West Marin Fund to encourage everyone to make a will and consider including a nonprofit as a recipient.

We believe everyone should have a will—regardless of your age or amount of assets. Having a discussion with your family and friends about your will can increase your quality of life right now! Writing a will ensures that you’ve done everything you can for your family as well as the causes and organizations you care about, ensuring their existence far into the future.

For the people who live here, and the thousands who visit, West Marin is paradise and seems nearly perfect. But the good things about West Marin don’t happen by accident. West Marin’s natural beauty hides a host of problems like low wages, high housing costs, poor public transportation, and other challenges of rural living, and more than 60 nonprofits help address our local issues and create the quality of life we value here.

When you leave a bequest to a West Marin nonprofit, you ensure our work sustains our beloved community for generations.

Mythbusters!

Myth

Wills are only important for people that have a lot of money.

Fact

Wills are important regardless of your wealth. It also helps to protect your children, your pets, and your legacy–while saving your loved ones stress and uncertainty
My family knows what I want–I don’t actually need a will.
Your family does not get to make decisions for you if you don’t write them down; the government does, and often slowly, while costing money from your estate.
Writing a will is a long, complicated and expensive process.
Writing a will can take less than 20 minutes and several websites offer free will creation including Freewill.com and Lawdepot.com. Nolo.com is another resource for wills, trusts and probate.

What is a Will?

A will is a legal document that explains how you would like your property and assets allocated after your death. You can appoint someone (a loved and/or trusted person) to be executor, who will carry out your will. The executor will be authorized by a court to oversee the distribution of your property and assets, and final wishes to be distributed to your beneficiaries.

If you do not make a will, your property and assets will be distributed to loved ones according to your state’s laws. Drafting your own will gives you agency over what you leave to your loved ones or to organizations that you care about.

Where there’s a WILL, there’s a WAY!
